Fantastic advice, Sharon, and it is interesting that life outside of freelancing brought them to mind. There are all sorts of non-business activities we do that can reflect a positive message in business.

One other aspect in the 'know right from wrong' factor is to freely offer advice and expert opinion. For example, last Thursday I had a table-meet (a meeting with a client who insists on face-to-face meetings and presentations rather than working via email or messenger), she wanted to create a page on the Web advertising a single product her brick-and-mortar small business provided. I advised her that, while I could provide what she wanted, she might prefer an online storefront instead of a single advertising page. Ultimately, I know my advice will benefit her business, make her more money, and save money in the long term even if it means a larger initial investment. But, because it was more than she had come to me for originally I needed to trust my professional judgment in this case and feel confident enough to express that.

Creating a product the client is happy with and going above and beyond are the best ways to guarantee repeat business and word-of-mouth. Not to mention, the best way to give the best of ourselves.

Hi George - I've never had an apology thrown back in my face and, equally, when I stand firm, clients usually know there's a good reason. I think in many ways it's about having self confidence. Then you can choose the strategy that suits the circumstances.

Hi Sharon,

Knowing when to stand firm and when to acquiesce is the hallmark of a great freelancer. Folks that let pride stand in the way will have a hard time making it in this business. I also think that your advise about not groveling is very sound. Recognize, apologize and move on is the best strategy.

Cheers

George
