Who’s Reading Your Blog?

by Sharon Hurley Hall on December 22, 2007

The other day I noticed that there was a new link to my blog from a site I didn’t recognise. I followed it and discovered a new writing blog. Even more surprising was that the author had been reading my writing advice for the last couple of years. I’m betting that I knew Marshall Krueger under an alias at a blogging site that went bust, and that’s probably why I didn’t recognise his name. However, I’m glad he linked to my blog, because now I’ve found another great writing blog to tell you about.

The site is called Freelance Writing Career (don’t you wish you’d snagged that domain name?) and it’s got a wealth of information about the business of writing, including a blog. There are pages on learning to write and becoming a writer, and much more, all from the perspective of a work at home dad.

This is a new blog, so there are only a few pages at the moment, but I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on it.

I’ve taken a look at Marshall’s blog. I approve, and I added it to my feed reader.

Three things aren’t going to keep it there:

First problem: He’s cut his excerpts so short that all I’m reading in my feed reader is the first sentence of his blog posts. Bad move, bad, bad. While I’m still big on full feeds, I’ll tolerate *some* partial excerpts if I can at least read the first couple of paragraphs. Marshall needs to keep in mind that people are busy and use feed readers to cut down on the time spent visiting sites.

Second problem: There is no contact information available on Marshall’s site. I wanted to drop him an email about the excerpts but after spending half an hour bouncing around his site looking for an email address, a contact form – or ANYTHING that lets me get in touch with Marshall, I’m still outta luck. Bad move, bad, bad.

Third problem: I can’t comment on any of his blog posts. That pisses me off to no end. How am I supposed to add my two cents, discuss a point he brings up in a post or ask questions? If Marshall wants to do as he says and fill a niche he feels is lacking (Um, beat you there, Michael…), then he should open up commenting and let writers participate in his blog. Of course, maybe he’s not into community or doesn’t want to get involved in moderating comments, but hey.

So, thanks for the heads up on the new blog, and if you ever find out how to get in touch with Marshall, you can tell him my thoughts. I’d be more than happy to follow his blog – but not as it is now.

Good points, James. I was not happy with the lack of contact info either, and it seems a strange move for a professional freelance writer. If we’d been clients, then we would have been unable to contact Marshall about jobs. However, since the site is new, maybe he’s still figuring things out, and your comments will give some useful pointers about how to develop the site.

Hi Sharon,

It’s fun when you come across a site that has linked to you, especially if you find it to be a useful site.

Thanks for pointing Marshall’s place out. I’m over to have a look now.

I love discovering new sites, Shelly. I’ve also been finding a few new ones through Entrecard.
