The View From My Office

A perfect Caribbean day.

One of the reasons that I like making my living as a web content writer is that I can work from anywhere.

It’s a case of have laptop, will travel – who could ask for more?

Where do you work and what can you see from your office window?

Oh god. There is no snow in that picture.

*suffers huge attack of culture shock*

I’m going to go get my camera and show you what I see :)

Can’t wait to see it, James. :)

Honestly, my first reaction to your post was, “Shut the %$&@ up, &#$@ head.” I’m trying to put a positive spin on it, but I’m ragingly jealous of that view!
Still, I get to work at Starbucks, the library, and my cozy desk… so I do recognize how lucky I am in comparison to other people who don’t live this fabulous online writing life…

This isn’t the norm but this was the picture from my office a couple weeks ago. http://www.blantonio.us/picture-of-the-beginning-of-the-storm/

I like yours much better. :-)

Nice view!

Being a free-lance professional and having a notebook I work on several different places.

This is more or less what I see from my window (although this pic wasn’t actually taken through the window), but when weather allows for it, sometimes I work here too.

Ohmigod… I HAVE to find the cable for my camera. Especially after seeing Blant’s picture of a “storm”. You want snow? I’ll show you snow!!

…if I could just find the cable to transfer the pics to the PC…

Yes, you are lucky, Stamford Talk. We don’t have Starbucks here – yet – so I guess you can’t have everything.

@ Blantonious: Thanks for sharing. Brrr!

@ Guilherme: That’s spectacular! You’re lucky to work somewhere so beautiful.

LOVELY view, Sharon!
I have a lake view which I show on The Writer’s Blog home page but right but that’s my summer view. As of right now I just see white…a pretty looking lake of white out my back door and dirty snow filled winter roads out through the front door. We have 3-4 feet high snow drifts outside and it’s really dirty looking.

Hey, I have an idea…how about a foreign exchange program? You come here for winters starting next year? LOL.

I work in bed. My bedroom view is train tracks. I don’t look out the window very often. :-)

When it’s nice weather, I work outside. When I travel (rarely anymore), I work where ever I can get a connection. Definitely a perk of the freelance life.

March 18, 2008 | 17:40

Yes, I’ve noticed your lake view before, Dana. It’s really beautiful.

@Amy: working on the move is one of the best bits of this life. :)

As much as I love palm trees, I think I’d rather have the views Guilherme has.

12. Guilherme Zühlke O'Connor
March 18, 2008 | 19:12

@wordvixen – :-) is is quite cool to have this view, actually. The only drawback is that I’m, mostly, a very urban person and here is way too quiet, except when the bell tolls in the church nearby.

Anyway, it’s the Alps, I can’t complain ;-)

Here’s the view from my window in a small Spanish village on a sunny day – not like today

@ wordvixen: Guilherme has a great view; it’s true!

@ chris: love the view – a Spanish village is a great place to live and work.

Not a very flattering view, but here it is. It’s garbage day, the grass is just starting to come up,and the sky is overcast. But here’s a view from the lodge on Mt. Charleston. Yes, we do have trees here in the desert, and right now this lodge is covered in about a foot or more of snow.

16. Sharon
March 19, 2008 | 12:27

Thanks for sharing, Harry. The view from the lodge is great. As for the other one, well, we all have days like that, even in the Caribbean. :)

We’re having a day like that today here in Spain :)

OK, James, that IS snow. How long is it since you’ve seen the ground?

19. James Chartrand - Men with Pens
March 19, 2008 | 12:47

It started snowing in November. Usually, we wonder if Xmas will be green or white, but there was no question of that this year. Usual snowmelt starts to happen slowly now through to the end of April, so we should see grass in May.

They were saying in the news last week that some of the snow mountains will still be standing by the time winter comes around next year.

Bienvenu à Québec :)

March 19, 2008 | 12:51

That is a loooong time to be under snow. :)

Guilherme- The Alps really are beautiful, aren’t they? I spent almost a week in Alberville, France at Le Centre Missionaire. They had a rooftop garden and patio, and I was there in August. It was the most incredible thing to be sitting on the roof with flowers in full bloom to my right, and snow capped mountains directly in front of me. If I could pick anywhere to write, that would be it!

@James, Your place is only a little bit worse than mine (Kawartha Lakes region, Ontario) Our local city workers are also striking so plows are on work to rule so not plowing regularly. My 12 year old has had more snow days this year than ever. Anxiously awaiting Spring!

23. Guilherme Zühlke O’Connor
March 20, 2008 | 06:46

@wordvixen – They are beautiful indeed. Every once in a while I go to the mountains with friends and the view from above is also beautiful.

Here you have some pics of a mountain trip on my wife’s flickr. This one in particular is me in the edge of a 1500m (4900ft) wall all the way down to the valley. Pretty scary, huh?

24. Sharon
March 20, 2008 | 06:54

Those are gorgeous pics. I’ve always loved the mountains. Not many of them around here.

March 23, 2008 | 13:08

For an idea of the view from my workspace window, you can just take James’s pictures, add a bit more snow, replace the buildings with trees, and throw in the twenty-seven deer that traipsed through my dooryard yesterday, single file, like some bizarre Northern camel train in a white desert. Otherwise, it’s practically identical. :)

26. James Chartrand - Men with Pens
March 23, 2008 | 15:39

@ Jen – You can’t be far from me then. More north… Quebec City?

27. Sharon
April 6, 2008 | 08:33

Hi all, just thought I’d restore the comments you left when the blog was MIA/broken.

From Jen: @James, not merely ‘more north’ – I’m a Maritimer. That’s likely why we talk so much about the weather: not so much else going on out here on the salt-blasted eastern fringe. ;)

From Adam Pieniazek: Wow, nice view! Ability to work from anywhere is one reason I quit my day job at a cube factory, where I sat facing a wall.

April 6, 2008 | 18:32

Still on the subject…

I’ve just created a professional page/profile for me in had laying around and when choosing a picture for it, I *had* to chose the one with me working in the park, instead of one working in my desk with tons of technology around

29. Sharon
April 6, 2008 | 19:02

Well, the one in the park is interesting (and will make everyone jealous) :)

You want to see a picture of my desktop? I’m glad you asked because I just got finished cleaning it up a bit. World’s most cluttered desktop

July 3, 2008 | 08:49

Now that IS cluttered, Austin. Organized chaos, eh?
