Promoting your freelance writing business can take a lot of time – and it’s worth it because it will make it easy for people to find you. In the long run, you will become the first choice for certain writing jobs. However, while you wait for that to happen, there are still a few things that you can do to raise your profile and bring in more business.
First of all, when’s the last time you changed your email signature? As others have said, your sig is a valuable promotional tool, whether you use it on your email or in forums. But after it’s been the same for a while, people tend to tune it out. That’s why I try to change mine every week to reflect the latest resource that I want to promote. I don’t always have something to sell, but I use the space to let people know that I have written a new article. I use the title (or a snappier version of it) as the main link, and sometimes I include a description, so that readers know what they will get. I’ve used this to good effect with my Garden and Hearth freelance writing site. When I put the title of the latest article in my email and blog sigs, I generated four times as much income from the site as when I didn’t.
Since I change the sig weekly, the people who see it don’t have a chance to get bored with it, and there’s a good chance that they will look at my article and comment on it. They may even Stumble it or bookmark it. Either way, I’ve raised my profile and made it easier for new people to find my writing.

I was guilty of that, too, Rose. I have changed all my forum sigs and most of my email ones, but keeping on top of it is the real difficulty
