Here’s the latest example:

I really need some reliable words of wisdom regarding the “real” potential to earn money at this kind of writing and the administrative work that goes into it. I know the energy input of the writing, but I’m hoping your site will have guidance on the return on investment and the amount of investment. – D

I was glad to see that D realized that you have to make an effort to succeed at getting paid to write online, but her questions about the investment required and the administrative work needed were also thought-provoking. First let’s look at the investment.

Investing in Writing Hardware

Any business needs an investment, and a writing business is no exception. When I started freelancing, I already had a computer and printer, which are the basics you need to get started. What kind of computer you get is up to you. I started out with a desktop, moved to a laptop so I could write from anywhere and moved back to a desktop once I had a fixed abode. I also have a laptop for going on the road and doing client presentations.

Fixed or Mobile Writing

My advice: if you want to be mobile, then get a laptop with the biggest screen and fastest processor but lightest weight you can achieve. If mobility is not necessary (say, for example, if you have to be around so kids can stay in school), then a desktop machine offers more hard disk storage, more processing power and the option of a bigger screen. A middle ground, which I have also used, is to have a laptop, but work on my desk with an external screen, keyboard and mouse.

Do You Need a Printer?

Unless you are working for local clients who need to see pieces of paper, you can probably manage without a printer and scanner at first. To replace those, you will need to have the ability to save documents as PDFs. I currently use two tools for this: the Microsoft Word 2007 add-on that lets me save documents as PDFs and doPDF which mimics a printer to let me create PDFs. We have a scanner in the house and once every six weeks or so I use it to scan in a signed contract to return to a client. Many now accept email signatures, so it’s getting rarer. As for printing, I have an HP LaserJet and my first toner lasted 2 years – that’s how little I print. There are other things you can get to trick out your office of course, like a headset, speakers and the usual assortment of software, but the entry cost isn’t very high. Next, let’s look at administering the writing business.

Writing Business Administration

Administering your writing business is where things get tricky. Unfortunately, it’s not enough to set out your shingle as a freelance writer and wait for the work to come in. As I pointed out in Getting Paid to Write – It’s More Than Just Writing on Growmap, there’s a whole lot of work to do in getting your name out there. There are tens of thousands of writers out there, all going after the same jobs. However, don’t be discouraged, because there is also plenty of writing work out there. In Key Aspects of Your Business Website for Writers (and Small Businesses and Others), I mention another investment you need to make – getting your own website as a platform for self-promotion.

The best way to illustrate what it takes to administer a writing business is to give you a snapshot of some of the tasks I undertake.

Key Writing Business Tasks

1. Every year, I set up my client tracking spreadsheet, which includes income comparison figures for the last four years, a forecast of expected earnings for the coming year, and a sheet where I track income received, income on the way and client leads. I’ll be setting that up before the end of the year.

2. I have subscribed to several job leads emails, which I skim and send bids/queries for the things that interest me. This is a daily task, or at least 3 times a week if I’m busy.

3. I set out a calendar, including both personal and work obligations and all deadlines so I can have an at-a-glance picture of where I stand. I make sure this appears on my iGoogle page and also send reminders if necessary.

4. I have a schedule for writing. I check email first thing in the morning, which is already lunchtime for my UK/European clients. I spend 3-4 hours writing in the morning, and another 2-3 in the afternoon. I also do a last email check at night. This schedule varies according to other commitments such as client meetings and volunteering.

5. I hang out online on Twitter, Google+ and Facebook as well as a couple of writer forums.

6. I manage income received by entering it in my spreadsheet and managing transfers between Paypal and my bank account. This usually involves checking exchange rates as my clients pay in three currencies.

7. At the end of every month, I tally the income, update my forecast and assess how much more marketing I need to do in the coming month.

There are probably other things I do automatically that I haven’t listed here, but these are some of the main ones – and they take time.

What about the ROI?

How you assess the return on investment for your writing business is about whether it meets your personal, professional and income goals. For myself, I can say that since I started freelancing, I have earned a steady income that covers my bills and allows for extras. So yes, you can earn money if you have the skill and put in the effort.

I’ve also made connections with great writers and bloggers, some of whom have become friends. I have met clients and others who trust my professional opinion, consider me their go-to person for writing and recommend me to everyone. I think that’s a pretty good return on the time and effort I have spent on developing my writing business.

So that’s my take on it, but I’d love to hear what the other experienced writers who read this blog have to say. Over to you …

There’s not a lot there at the moment, but for those who prefer to get news of blog updates on that site, that’s where it will happen. My thinking at the moment, though this may change, is that I’ll share all GPTWO content on its page, while continuing to share selectively on my own personal Google+ profile. This feature is so new that it’s hard to say how it will develop. I’ve shared my initial thoughts here. If you’re interested in getting your own page, then check out this easy tutorial from Hesham Zebida. And if you’re a writer, come back and share your page with me so I can check it out.

It's time to find out a bit more about Sharon Hurley Hall, writer extraordinaire and owner of GetPaidToWriteOnline.com

Every week, we get thousands of people reading the information that’s published here on GetPaidToWriteOnline.com.

Before I started writing here, I used to visit regularly and take in everything that both Sharon and Dana said.

Over the last few few months, I’ve been getting to know Sharon a bit better and I recently had a chat with her about a range of different topics.

I realised that if I was interested about Sharon’s life and career, most of you would be, too and so today you can read through the interview I had with Sharon.

Feel free to ask any questions that I haven’t covered or which you’d like elaborating on.

I’m contemplating the idea of running this as a feature, so if you’ve got any writer in mind that you’d like me to interview, let me know and I’ll try and have a chat with them, asking them any specific questions that you’ve got.

Dan Smith: We all know you here at GetPaidToWriteOnline.com as a freelance writer and blogger – how about telling us a little about your personal life away from work?

Sharon Hurley Hall: Personal life? What personal life? Seriously, I’ve been happily married to my soulmate for nearly 11 years and we have a beautiful 8 year old daughter. I’ve lived in different parts of the world, most recently the UK and, for the last five years, the Caribbean.

DS: And a little something that not many people know?

SHH: I don’t have any unusual hobbies, but the things I enjoy doing most in my spare time are reading (I’m a book junkie), playing Scrabble (I recently managed 3 seven letter words in a single game – nirvana) and going to pub quizzes (they appeal to the trivia hound in me).

DS: As we said, most people will know you as a blogger, freelance writer and owner of GPTWO. Is GPTWO your primary project? Do you work on another aspect of your business more?

SHH: I often describe GPTWO as my baby, though at 6 years old, my baby is growing up. GPTWO isn’t my main business, though it does bring in some income; it’s more a labour of love. I started it to help other freelance writers and six years on it’s still going, with a little help from you, Dana and friends. I spend most of my time doing client work and I also have a couple of pet projects which I’m hoping to do something with over the next 6-12 months.

DS: GPTWO is obviously a successful freelance writing blog. Are you happy with its success?

SHH: Very happy. When I started blogging, I had no idea it would resonate with so many people and I’m pleased that it’s still doing so.

DS: Have you got any specific plans for GPTWO?

SHH: I’d hesitate to call them plans at this point, but I’d like to include occasional audio and video on the site and I have a couple of ideas for more information products aimed mostly at new writers. As a former journalism lecturer and a working writer for (ahem) 20+ years, I feel I have a few insights to offer into the writing business and I’d like to share them.

DS: Tell us a little about your other freelance writing projects.

SHH: How long have you got? I took to blogging the minute I started and contribute regularly to other blogs. One of my biggest client projects is running the Taking Off Travel Blog for Park Ride Fly USA, but my freelance writing resume is littered with stints at sites including Daily Writing Tips, Blogging Tips, Quips and Tips for Writers and many others. I’ve also ghostwritten thousands of articles and dozens of ebooks on subjects ranging from consumer finance to business development. I love learning new things, so I’m almost always interested in a new topic. Oh, and recently I added another string to my bow by learning to write resumes (something I’ve done for friends and family for years, but it’s nice to have it bring in a few pennies.)

DS: Any interesting / nightmare freelance writing stories?

SHH: In six years, I’ve only had a problem getting paid twice. In the first case, it turned out that my client, who’d previously had an exemplary payment record, became an addict and disappeared off the horizon, taking my last two months’ payment with him. The other was a client who passed on her cash flow problems to me – she’d previously paid up on time, so I had no idea that things were about to go wrong. All things considered, I’ve been very lucky, though, and my usual payment terms generally prevent that from happening with new clients.

It’s hard to pick out any particularly interesting story. I’m fascinated by the writing business and learning new things so I find it all interesting. One of the most challenging ghostwriting jobs I did was a book based on management theory. It was meant to make it readable and interesting and I had to conjure the book up out of thin air (and a 1 page outline). I felt a real sense of accomplishment when that was done.

DS: How long have you been a freelance writer? Have you always been a freelance writer / involved in writing? If not, how did you get into it?

SHH: I’ve been involved in writing ever since I left university. My first job was as an assistant editor/reporter which I got because the company needed someone who could also speak and write fluent French and Spanish (those were the days). Since then I’ve been involved in the writing profession in different roles – as a journalist, feature writer and editor, working for a range of organisations and publications. Freelancing is relatively recent – although I submitted a couple of freelance pieces when I was employed, I’ve only been a full time freelancer for 6 years.

DS: Have you always wanted to be a freelance writer?

SHH: Actually, no. As a child and teenager I enjoyed building things and planning houses, so you would have thought architecture would have been a good profession. Sadly, my artistic skills are minimal, so that was a no-go. At the end of high school, I thought seriously about a lucrative and fulfilling career as a French interpreter and translator, but life had other plans, and once I started writing professionally, I fell in love with it. I’ve always written, though – I have the journals, poems and half finished novels which most writers have.

DS: One of the major downfalls for any freelancer is that the work – and therefore payment – can be sporadic. How do you deal with this?

SHH: I have been very lucky, experiencing very few troughs. However, I think it’s essential to plan ahead. That means looking for work before you run out, following up with old clients every so often to remind them that you exist and being alert to new opportunities.

DS: Have you ever wanted to leave the freelance writing career behind and get a full time, office job?

SHH: Never. Freelancing allows me flexibility that an office job never would. I worked in offices for a long time and I’m not planning to go back.

DS: Would you say that you’ve had a successful freelance writing career to date?

SHH: Pretty successful: it’s varied and brings in enough to live on. Of course, there’s always room for improvement – while I don’t need to have a four hour work week, I’d like to spend less time sitting at my desk, working smarter rather than harder. I’m always looking for ways to become more efficient.

DS: What are your plans for the future?

SHH: In the medium term I’d like to rejig my writing business so that I write for clients 40% of the time, and divide the other 60% between my own writing projects and creating time to think and to enjoy life. I’ll never stop writing, but I want to use those skills in the short term to create more useful information products similar to the blogging ebook I wrote.

DS: The premise behind GPTWO is obviously to help people get paid for their writing. Do you feel it’s more difficult or easier now to get paid to write than it was when you first started?

SHH: Hmm, that’s a tough question. There are more and more opportunities for online writers, but not all of these pay the rate you’d want. The other day I applied for a writing gig, only to find that it paid a princely $5 for a 500 word article. If that pay rate had been in the ad, I wouldn’t have bothered. At the other end of the scale, when you work for people who recognize the value of good writing, there’s no difficulty in finding high paying gigs. For most writers, I suspect there’s a combination of high and medium paid gigs.

DS: For anyone who has read GPTWO, they’ll be aware that I’ve said time and time again how friendly the freelance writing community is. Have you made any friends over the years?

SHH: Lots of them. There are too many to name them all, but here are a few. There’s a strong group of blogging buddies – we all started blogging at around the same time in 2005 – they include Dana Prince, Mitchell Allen and Rebecca Leaman, among others, as well as Malcolm Campbell, Shelly Bryant and Ralph (aka Pinhole). Suzanne James of Inspired Author was also part of the site and was a big help in teaching me about SEO. Then there are the people I read online, most of them writers, including James Chartrand, Jenn Mattern, Cathy Miller, Laura Spencer and my GPTWO writing community, which includes you, of course. The freelancing community is fantastic and I really enjoy interacting with my Twitter, Facebook and blogging friends every week.

DS: When it comes to freelance writing, do you have any specialities?

SHH: I’m more of a master of all trades and jack of none. I can write about aspects of writing (building skills, running a business), that almost goes without saying. For a long time I specialized in writing about consumer finance, thanks to a long ago stint with the Financial Times. I am pretty good at testing and reviewing web tools because of my thinly disguised geekery and I’ve done that for 5 or 6 blogs at different times. But I have also written about all sorts of things including fire safety, real estate and property, travel, self publishing, learning languages, the English language, online promotion, parenting, lifestyle design and much more. You name it, I probably know a bit of trivia about it.

DS: How about an area you haven’t tackled yet but want to?

SHH: Since I’m primarily a writer, the area that I’d like to do more with is audio and video versions of (or additions to) the posts, articles and ebooks that I write). I’ve had lots of good advice, but haven’t acted on it. I’m determined to get over that mental block within the next year.

DS: You’re an advocate of the Location Independent strategy – could you tell us a little bit more about this?

SHH: For me location independence is partly a state of mind. It’s about recognizing that you can make your life and work from anywhere. For others, it’s about constantly being on the move, which wouldn’t really work for me. I like to have a base, with the freedom to travel.

DS: So you like travelling? Tell us about some of the places you’ve lived in / travelled to.

SHH: I’ve lived mostly in the UK and different parts of the Caribbean but have travelled in Europe (France, Spain, Germany and the Canaries), South America (Venezuela and Mexico), North America (New York, New Jersey, Florida, Chicago). I’ve been to Bahrain and have also been to Trinidad, Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Grenada, Carriacou, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Montserrat and Antigua. Not all of those in the last few years, of course.

DS: Have you ever / do you want to tie your travelling into your writing?

SHH: Since I run a travel blog for a client (which I’ve been doing since 2008), I’m able to blog about some of my trips there. I also contribute occasionally to other travel blogs and I share a travel blog with my husband, which I update occasionally. I’d like to do more travel writing.

DS: That golden, if not a little clichéd, question – have you got any words of wisdom for aspiring freelance writers?

SHH: Freelancing isn’t always easy, but it’s interesting and rewarding. You’ve got to be ready to put in the groundwork and accept a few lean months before success arrives.

DS: Interviews always finish with something interesting, funny or profound – have you got anything along those lines?!

SHH: I’ve got nothing profound myself, but how about this quote from Mark Twain: The time to begin writing an article is when you have finished it to your satisfaction. By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is you really want to say.

I get a query about something that appeared in an old issue of my newsletter. Since I’m now on my third newsletter provider, it can be difficult to find all the information. So I’ve decided to put it here to help you find previously published articles on writing.

The most recent issues are on the Get Paid to Write Online newsletter page on Aweber.

Issues 13-56 are on the Ezezine archive page for Writing Lab News (the old name)

Issues for the first year (1-12) are no longer online in the original format. However, you can still find them in Volume 1 of Write Your Way to Freelance Success, available for Kindle. If you don’t have a Kindle, then download the book anyway and read it on any device with the excellent Calibri software.

Finally, to help you find out which issue of the newsletter you want to access, here’s a full index of articles for the first five years:

Get Paid to Write Online Newsletter Index April 2006-March 2011

The first question I’m going to tackle is: “How do I write online and make money without it costing me money?” The questioner was anonymous, but I thought we could all benefit from this.

Writing online and making money is simple, though not easy. By that I mean that there are plenty of writing opportunities out there. There are also lots of people who take the time to weed out the dross so that you don’t waste your time. It’s no secret that I like the Writer’s Bridge, but since that costs a fee, I won’t include it here. Instead, I suggest that you focus on the opportunities available through Freelance Writing Gigs, the Problogger job board and others. See my post on freelance writing opportunities for ideas.

Although it can be difficult to win bids on freelance marketplaces such as Elance and Guru, you can sign up for these and others and take advantage of the free membership level. Since many clients post jobs on several boards, being selective will mean that you can bid for a large number of jobs without having to upgrade any of your accounts. Admittedly, this isn’t my favorite way to get work, but it works for some people.

Finally, you can do what others have done successfully. Start by writing for free contributing guest posts to blogs that you like and you may be able to parlay this into a paid blogging job. It’s yet another way to write online and get paid – without spending a dime! Good luck!

P.S.

If you don’t mind investing in your career, then consider these options:

invest $30 in a year’s subscription to Writer’s Market – you will have your pick of writing markets that offer decent pay

sign up for the Writer’s Bridge daily job listing

subscribe to the Freelance Switch job board

Hope you’re taking advantage of all it can do for you!

The other day, Sharon Hurley Hall was elated when she had a rave review from a happy client. Don’t glowing testimonials just make your day? Mine, too. One day this week I had a particularly difficult assignment and when I sent it off, I was waiting for it to come back with red pen all over it. But it didn’t. The client said, “This is great. Thanks so much for all your hard work!” If you’ve had great testimonials, don’t sit on them or smile and then file them away. Share them with the world. Seriously. Toot your own horn. It’ll help you immensely. Here’s how:

-Add it to a testimonials page on your website. This page will show prospective customers how past customers have felt about your work. More content on your website equals more potential traffic, too. Every time you update your site, search engines could come visit to see what you’ve added and then send you increasingly relevant traffic. If you look at Sharon’s testimonial linked above, you’ll see another reason why clients find her and offer work to her. Her testimonials help her with her online marketing. marketing. How? That testimonial is on its own page on her writing site with a keyword optimized permalink structure, relevant category, and tags that relate to the type of writing and to testimonials. This strategy ups the chances that someone looking for those specific services will find Sharon and find out that not only does she offer resume writing services but also that people LOVE her work. I have a testimonials page on my website today but think I’ll take a cue from Sharon and re-create individual pages on my blogs for those reviews as well.

-Send the kudos out to the social sphere. Mention it on Twitter, Plurk, Facebook… wherever you hang out online. A prospective customer may read it and contact you for a quote. (Hint: This works well when you use the Twitter widget on your blog, too. Clients can see those testimonials in your sidebar when they browse your website to see if they’d like to approach you for a quote.)

-Add some short but rave reviews to your bidding template. Do you use a template when you apply to writing gigs? If so, a few blurbs about what existing and past customers have said about your quality of work could help tip the scales in your favour.

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to consider when posting testimonials:

-Don’t post the client’s name unless they give you permission to do so.

-Do consider linking back to the client’s site or the source of work you’ve done, if the client is agreeable and you aren’t going to be breaching any ghostwriting / confidentiality agreements, of course. Then, you can show prospects what all the buzz is about.

-Don’t be afraid to ask . If a client seems happy, ask them if you can have a testimonial. Offer to link to their site, if they like. Links are coveted online and offering a link could make your client jump at the chance to write a recommendation or… to sign off on a recommendation you’ve written for them about you. (A client of mine didn’t have time to write one but responded when I told him I was offering links on my testimonials page and he gave me the green light to write the testimonial for him and to tell the world how much he valued me. )

-Do consider joining and using LinkedIn. This site is great for creating a professional profile and networking. There’s a feature on the site where you can get and give recommendations and those are updated in your time line so those recommendations are viewable by others (after you approve their going live). If people recommend you on LinkedIn, you may want to add those recommendations to your own site or blog as well. Don’t be afraid to recommend great clients on LinkedIn and perhaps they’ll return the favour.

The next time you get a pat on the back, I hope you’ll use it to your advantage!

<g:plusone size="standard" count="1" href="http://www.getpaidtowriteonline.com/is-your-writing-like-powdered-milk/"></g:plusone>

There’s a fine line between research and plagiarism. How often have you researched a topic only to find that someone else has already said it in the best possible way?

When that happens, the temptation is to rewrite and disguise it, but use it anyway. The trouble is, that’s not creative. It’s like adding water to powdered milk – reconstituting something that already exists.

The temptation can be overwhelming, particularly when deadlines loom. But powdered milk writing does a disservice to both you and your client. As a writer, you want to showcase the qualities that your client is paying for:

Originality

Facility with language

Good research skills

In order to do that properly, you need to do more than regurgitate what someone else has said. Note that I said regurgitate. I have no problem with writers getting information from several sources, synthesizing and adding their own creative flair to make it original. That’s called research.

If you have ever done a rewrite you will know what I mean. I haven’t done them for a while, but I did a few when I started out in freelancing, because that’s what some of my clients asked for. I always found it easy to research and write an article, but more challenging to spin it twice or three times more. That’s because there was no originality and no creativity. It may have been what the client wanted, but it tasted like powdered milk to me.

What’s your take on this?
