My Desk Is Broken

by Sharon Hurley Hall on November 11, 2007

My keyboard shelf is currently propped up against a wall. I’m typing with a keyboard on my lap. This takes me back to last year, when I moved into the house and was working under some unusual conditions. I’ve known this was coming for a while. The shelf has been hard to move and has fallen out at least once a day for the last week or so. Yesterday, it came out for good.

The lesson in this is to take care of your essential equipment – and it doesn’t get more essential than a good computer desk with a keyboard shelf at the right height. You need to be able to look straight at your screen and use your mouse in a comfortable position. OK, keeping the keyboard on my lap will work for a short time, but it’s no good having an ergonomic keyboard if you use it in a position that will give you repetitive strain injury.

So, what’s the solution? In the short term, I’ll ask my handy hubby to replace the offending screw with one that will actually hold the darned shelf in place. In the long term, I’ll probably be looking for a new desk.

You have excellent writing style. Why not try some freelance writing as well, or I suppose – you are already in business?

My desk collapsed a few months ago. Luckily, it was in an alcove and the desk tipped sideways which meant the monitor fell against the wall and didn’t go crashing to the floor. It was quite alarming though, I was sitting at it when it happened LOL

There are some gorgeous desks out there. I am thinking next year I might want a new one. I have a section of my dining room as my office and saw great office furniture with matching dining room suites. Now, just tell me how to get to .10/word so I can afford it all, ok?
LOL.

Careful with that lap business…no way that will be good for your wrists if you’re pulling 7000-8000 word days.

Ouch! Slightly more dramatic than my experience, Kate. I was sitting typing when the whole shelf slid out into my lap. It was more annoying than anything else. It’s repaired now, but my handy hubby assures me that this is the last time it can be fixed.

lol, Dana. That would be great. My keyboard shelf is fixed now, thank goodness. You’re right, I can’t afford to mess up my wrists if I want to keep on freelancing.
