More Writing Help – And A New Theme

If I’ve been quiet, it’s because I’ve been working behind the scenes to make a few changes to the site. The first of those is obvious – I’ve gone back to using the Thesis Theme, spiffed up with the help of Hesham Zebida’s Silver Skin, from ThesisAwesome.

One of the great things that does is give regular contributors a nice author bio – see Dan’s here. Meanwhile Chris Hoole, who’s contributed a couple of posts in the past, will be posting here occasionally (welcome, Chris), which I think is a great addition to the team. On the front page, you can now see more posts, along with author details, comments and tweets.

You’ll also notice some changes in the sidebar. The most recent posts in our most popular categories are near the bottom. The Ask Sharon box is gone, mainly because most of the people using it wanted me to hire them (sorry, I’m not hiring). Instead, I’ve added some of the common questions asked, with links to resources on this site. If there’s something you want to know that’s not answered there, then by all means contact me via the site or ask me on Twitter, my Facebook page or my Google+ profile. You can find links to subscription options and social profiles in the top navigation menu and in the sidebar.

I’ve still got a couple more changes planned, to make some of the nearly 800 posts more accessible. For example, I’m looking for a better way of displaying the sitemap and also linking to some of the series we’ve published here. If there’s anything that would make this site more usable for you, contact me and I’ll be happy to consider it.

  1. Hi Sharon, great to see you getting Thesis and Silver Blogskin. Hesham has done such a fine job with these blogskins and I’d be lost without his guidance. The author bio boxes are the best around ๐Ÿ™‚
It’s looking great around here Sharon. Cheers!

    • Thanks, Ileane. I was really inspired by what you have done with Basic Blog Tips and I’ve been thinking about a Thesis Awesome skin ever since. Winning DiTesco’s competition was a bonus and I’m looking forward to trying out the Product Skin on another blog.

      • Looking good Sharon. I’m interested in knowing why you canned Woo. IS Thesis really THAT good. Love the button in the sidebar too ๐Ÿ™‚

        • Hey Ivin, I have no problems with Woo. My last theme was from Elegant Themes and I liked it, but every time I wanted to change I would have had to input all the settings again. At least with Thesis, I can download and re-upload my settings. Also, apart from Catalyst, Thesis is one of the fastest loading themes out there. ๐Ÿ™‚ Buttons have been on the cards for a while, but I’ve only just got around to it. Putting those there has sent more people to those posts already. ๐Ÿ˜€

          • May I humbly suggest a plugin? Reply me will let your commentators know you replied to them. I always remember ‘Hey, I left a comment there and there on Sharons blog. Wonder what she replied’. This way I’ll always get the message that you did.

  2. Wow Sharon!

The site is already looking great, and I can’t wait to see what more you plan doing with it. It sure is a learning experience for me, as I am truly motivated to switch to WordPress after seeing your site!

Wishing you all the very best and looking forward to more beautiful changes ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Hi Sharon,

I have got a question. All of my blogs run WordPress. I use free themes like Cutline which, by the way, is designed by the same person who designed the Thesis theme. I was wondering if switching to a premium theme like Thesis or Genesis would make me more visible in SERPs.

    • The very first time I used Thesis I noticed an improvement because of the SEO benefits. But that’s not the whole story. It’s also about using tags, descriptions, etc and about distributing your content where people will see it.

  4. Wooot, looking good. I think you have made a wise decision on moving back to Thesis. It is such a great theme, one you get familiar with it, and combined with the power of Hesham’s skins, it will just get better. BTW, it is loading very fast… that’s great! Wish you much success..

    • Thanks, DiTesco. Hesham’s skins really give Thesis an added zest and I’m happy about the faster loading time. I think I’ll stick with Thesis now. I’m also looking forward to trying out the Product Skin on another site – I’ll keep you posted. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Hey Sharon ,

    Nice move ๐Ÿ˜‰

Grab my email from the comment and send me, I will be glad to setup you an account at so you can get updates and support in the forum.

  6. I really like your site, Sharon. It is very clean looking and easy on the eyes. Sally

  7. Sharon,
Thanks for this. I had HeatMap theme on my site, and I recently went to the Thesis theme also. One thing, I’m going to have to figure out is how to turn that author box on. I did not know you could do that. Is that a feature of Thesis?

  8. Sharon, this makeover is nice! It’s cool how there’s a whole ‘nother world in the footer. Keeps the main viewing area clean.
