Lowballing is very annoying, Debra. I would usually follow that up (if I wanted the gig) with a restatement of the value I bring. Otherwise I would politely decline.

This is a really helpful article. I’ve been frustrated the last few weeks as I’ve tried to build my client base, because I’ll list what I think is a fair price–in fact, what I know is under market value–but I usually get emails to the effect of, “Gee, we’d love to work with you, but Bidder X said he would do it for $.0000005 per word, so we went with him.” I’m not above negotiating fees, but if they get too ridiculously low, what’s the point? Sorry to rant,it’s just a little discouraging…

Thanks, Dana. That is one of the hardest things to learn. I don’t always get it right, but I try to be specific when responding to a client’s brief. It seems to work.

Very good post. I especially liked how you shared your approach with the client because so many new to writing haven’t a clue how to bid or how to present themselves. Excellent advice!
