One thing I've heard of writers doing is buying a wall calendar and flipping it six months forward. Then you'll always remember what day it is on "magazine time." I'm a child of the digital age, so my system is a little different: I mark events or ideas I'm thinking of writing about in my online Google calendar, and then make a copy of that event and move it six months back--fewer if I have a publication in mind and know what their lead times are. Then while I'm checking my appointments for the day, pitches and ideas are right there in my face. Sharon, thanks for the tip.
