You’ve pointed out a very important truth that most writers figure out sooner or later – that some “prospects” will masquerade as potential clients serious about hiring your services when what they’re really after is free information. Once you know that it happens, the trick is distinguishing the real prospects from those just looking to pick your brain for ideas.

    Yes. It’s tricky at times but I think I’ve developed a pretty good nose for it. This career is definitely an ongoing learning journey!

  3. Great point about have pre-made packages for new clients. I use pre-made packages that I will “sell” to the client based on what I know of them so far. It gives them an idea of what they can do and also suggests limitations. But be ready to modify your pre-made plans to a certain degree – and account for it in your fee.
